1ST Quarter_Week 3_Discussion 1
Watch the video and answer the following questions:
1. What are the communication barriers that the 2 persons experienced?
The girl (Lin) is experiencing psychological barriers and internal noises due to how other Filipinos saw her when she's with her boyfriend (Arthur). Meanwhile, as a couple, they both experience linguistic barriers and semantic noises.
2. Why does breakdown of communication occur?
Communication breakdown occurs when the speaker and the receiver can’t fully connect and understand each other because of the barriers and noises that surround them.
3. What is AFAM? What is Jacky Lou? What is Gold Digger?
AFAM – (a foreign assigned to Manila) in short, a foreigner.
Jacky Lou – a tagalog play on words with Jacky—Jackpot and Lou—Lugi. It refers to when two people are in a win-lose situation where one has all the benefits while the other one suffers many loss.
Gold Digger – refers to a person who goes into a relationship with a rich person in order to gain monetary compensation.
4. What are the issues of the girl? Enumerate and explain.
Lin is suffering from the stigmatism of her fellow countrymen. Although most of them are just joking about it, their words cut deep and she has now suffered insecurity and low self-esteem when it comes to herself and her relationship with Arthur. Not only that, she also experiences linguistic barriers and semantic noises with her boyfriend. She can’t fully express her emotions and thoughts to Arthur because she is having a hard time converting them into words that he can understand. She also has to explain terminologies and idioms from Tagalog so that Arthur will understand her.
5. Can their situation be resolved/improved? If yes, why and how? If no explain why.
Yes, although it will be hard, it is not impossible to overcome the barriers separating the two of them. We can’t actually do anything about the psychological barrier and internal noises that Lin is suffering because those two have a lot of uncontrollable factors to take into account since they both came from stigmatism (which naturally stems from human nature). However, there is a way to overcome the linguistic barrier and the semantic noises that are separating them. With enough time and hard work, they can teach each other about their language and culture so that they will be able to cultivate their feelings even deeper than before.
